When RV Camping in Virginia, Take Some Time to Explore the Washington DC Area

Washington DC, one of America’s most historic cities, is luckily just a short drive away from our Virginia campgrounds. In addition to being the nation’s capital and showcasing buildings and memorials that offer a great look into the country’s past, Washington DC also gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy huge celebrations, walk through unique neighborhoods and much, much more.

Historic Attractions Around the Washington DC Area

Throughout the District of Columbia there are memorials, museums and monuments that pay tribute to past leaders, heroes and others integral in the growth of the United States. From early presidents like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln to our American soldiers who fought so bravely for our country are honored in very respectful and informative ways. Here’s just a short list of attractions that you may want to consider visiting:

  • Washington Monument
  • Lincoln Memorial
  • Jefferson Memorial
  • Mount Vernon, George Washington’s home
  • WWII Memorial
  • Vietnam Veterans Memorial
  • Korean War Veterans Memorial
  • Holocaust Memorial Museum
  • Smithsonian Institute

Because there are so many great attractions, planning an agenda before you jump in your RV and head down to New Point Campground or Gwynn’s Island RV Resort is recommended.

Washington DC is also the place to be for a more current look at what is happening with the US. The White House, US Capitol and The Pentagon all reside in the area, and are three of the most important buildings in setting the direction for America.

Washington DC Neighborhoods

Like many metropolitan cities, DC is also home to a number of distinct and popular neighborhoods. Each offers a unique culture, identity, architectural style and of course, food selection. A trip away from the RV park to one of these neighborhoods offers the chance to see how other communities have grown, and to eat some unique, local fare.

  • Brookland
  • Capitol Hill
  • Downtown
  • Foggy Bottom
  • Georgetown
  • Waterfront
  • Cleveland Park

Annual Events

Washington DC is also home to world famous celebrations. With a rich history and dynamic group of residents, the festivals seem to get bigger and better each year! Here are just a few that they host annually to plan your Virginia camping trip around:

  • Cherry Blossom Festival in the Spring
  • Fourth of July Celebration
  • Jazz Festival
  • National Book Festival
  • Marine Corps Marathon
  • Veterans Day
  • Christmas Tree Lighting

The most popular attraction in Washington DC may be The National Zoo. The zoo is a great place for kids and adults to visit to see and learn about animals in a peaceful environment. This park is known as a worldwide leader in both animal care and research. So stop by and say hello to the animals and researchers at The National Zoo on your day trip away from the campground.
